English and Foreign Language

Developmental Courses:

ENG 0113, Beginning English, 3 cr.
This developmental course helps students write paragraphs with complete sentences, free of mechanical and grammatical errors. Students must receive a “C” to progress. Prerequisite: ACT score of 11-14 in English or equivalent.   This course does not satisfy degree or program requirements. 3 hours lecture

 

ENG 0123, Intermediate English,  3 cr.
In this course, students develop effective college-level expository writing with a review of grammatical and mechanical skills.  Prerequisite:  ACT score of 15-17 in English (or equivalent) or a “C” or above in ENG 0113. This course does not satisfy degree or program requirements. 3 hours lecture

 

Composition Courses:

Prerequisites for English 2153 ENG 1113 and ENG 1123

Traditional Grammer – A course for elementary education majors, serious writers, and teachers of writing, this course focuses on English fundamentals- all the aspects of traditional grammar that teachers may encounter in teaching language skills. 3 hrs. credit

 

ENG 1113, English Composition I, 3 cr.
This course emphasizes the development of effective writing techniques and focuses on expository writing, some of which may be in response to assigned readings.  Students also learn research skills.  Students must demonstrate competency in basic computer usage to exit the course.  Prerequisite:  ACT score of 18 or above in English (or equivalent) or a “C: or above in English 1023.  3 hours lecture.

 

ENG 1123, English Composition II, 3 cr.
Students continue to develop effective techniques of writing and reading.  The course emphasizes refining style, using discrimination in word choice and expressing the results of critical reading, thinking and analysis.  Readings include poetry, drama, short stories and essays.  Special attention is given to the use of library and reference materials, culminating in the writing of critical papers and research themes.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113. 3 hours lecture.

 

Literature Courses:

 

ENG 2223, American Literature I, 3 cr.
This course is a survey of the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Romantic Periods of American Literature.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123.  3 hours lecture

 

ENG 2233, American Literature II, 3 cr.
This course is a survey of the literature from the Realistic to Modern Period of American Literature.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture

 

ENG 2323, British Literature I, 3 cr.
This course is a survey of English literature from Beowulf through the Ages of Neo-Classicism.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture

 

ENG 2333, British Literature II, 3 cr.
This course is a survey of English literature from the Age of Revolution and Romance to the present time.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture

 

ENG 2423, World Literature I, 3 cr.
Students survey their culture and intellectual heritage found in the literature of the ancient cultures of the Hebrews, the Greeks and the Romans, as well as the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture

 

ENG 2433, World Literature II, 3 cr.
The works of French, Russian and African as well as English, North and South American authors offer a survey of a more recent cultural and intellectual heritage that includes literature from the Neo-Classical age through the present.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture

 

Creative Writing:

 

ENG 2133, Creative Writing I, 3 cr.
Students write fiction, poetry and informal essays. Some exercises are based on readings followed by writing practice in these genres.  Prerequisite:  ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. 3 hours lecture.

 

ENG 2143, Creative Writing II, 3 cr.
This course is a continuation of ENG 2133.  Students refine skills learned in ENG 2133 by writing complete poems, short stories, and/or one-act plays.  This course is the last creative writing course students can take for credit.  Prerequisite:  ENG 2133 or its equivalent. 3 hours lecture

 

Modern Foreign Language:

 

MFL 1213, Spanish I, 3 cr.
This course specifically serves to establish the foundation for continuing development of all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), in addition to providing opportunities to learn more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world.  3 hours lecture.

MFL 1213/1223, Spanish I & II, 6 cr.
This accelerated course is comprised of five lecture sessions per week plus a lab component. Students will develop basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension at a beginning level and will study cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.

 

MFL 1213/1223, Spanish I & II, 6 cr.
This accelerated course is comprised of five lecture sessions per week plus a lab component. Students will develop basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension at a beginning level and will study cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.

MFL 1223, Spanish II, 3 cr.
This course is a continuation of MFL 1213 and serves to promote further development of previously learned skills and knowledge.  Students will be able to express themselves in a culturally appropriate manner in various time frames.  Prerequisite:  A grade of D or higher in MFL 1213 or one year of high school Spanish. 3 hours lecture

 

MFL 2213, Spanish III, 3 cr.
This course promotes more advanced implementation of all four language skills with even more emphasis placed on oral communication.  Prerequisite: A grade of D or higher in MFL 1213 and 1223, or two years of high school Spanish.  3 hours lecture.

MFL 2213/2223, Spanish III & IV, 6 cr.
As a continuation of MFL 1213/1223, this course design remains the same with respect to class meetings and lab requirements.  Students develop language skills at a more advanced level.  Grammar and language mechanics are major points of emphasis in this course.  Prerequisite: MFL 1213 and 1223, or two years of high school Spanish.  5 hours lecture, 2 hours lab.

 

MFL 2213, Spanish IV, 3 cr.
This advanced course gives students an opportunity to better develop proficiency in reading and listening comprehension, conversational skills, and in writing.  Prerequisites: A grade of D or higher in MFL 1213, 1223, and 2213, or 3 years of high school Spanish.  3 hours lecture.

MFL 2213/2223, Spanish III & IV, 6 cr.
As a continuation of MFL 1213/1223, this course design remains the same with respect to class meetings and lab requirements.  Students develop language skills at a more advanced level.  Grammar and language mechanics are major points of emphasis in this course.  Prerequisite: MFL 1213 and 1223, or two years of high school Spanish.  5 hours lecture, 2 hours lab.
