Resume Overview

What is a resume?

A resume is a snapshot of your abilities.  It is a market tool that you use to market yourself.  A resume shows your qualifications, experience, and education.  It shows an employer why they should invite you for an interview.  A resume is read quickly and should be easy to read and only one page in length. It should be organized in such a way that it tells about you in an interesting and precise manner.

A well written resume should always:

  • Be neat, spelled correctly, and typed on good quality paper
  • Be simple, direct and easy to read
  • Be one page-never more than two. Do not use small type to get more on the page.
  • Stress achievements
  • Be positive and enthusiastic
  • Be honest
  • Be specific about what job you want, your abilities, etc.

A resume should never include:

  • Personal Information- such as race, religion, age, weight, or height.
  • Any mention of salary or wages- that you have earned or expect to earn.
  • Any discussion about why you left a job.
  • Any false information or statements that exaggerate your abilities.
  • Any negative information.
  • References should not be listed on your resume.

Will you need more than one resume?

Sometimes it is appropriate to have several resumes to highlight specific qualification.  For example, if you are seeking employment based on your qualification as a secretary you would need a resume emphasizing experience.  However, if you were seeking a career change away from your secretarial experiences, you would need a resume that focused on your newly acquired education.  An appropriate place to state the type of position you are seeking is under a section entitled Objectives.
