MCC adheres to the following definitions in regard to a prospective student’s residency:
- Residence of a minor student (one less than 21 years of age) will be defined to be that of either parent. If both parents are deceased, the residence will be that of the last surviving parent. If the minor lives with a court-appointed guardian, the residence of the minor will be the same as that of the guardian.
- Residence of an adult will be that place where he/she is actually living with the intention of remaining there indefinitely.
- Residence of a married student will be that of the student’s spouse or may be claimed to be independent of the spouse as defined above for an adult student.
- Military personnel and their dependents assigned to active duty in Mississippi will be considered state residents for the purpose of attending MCC. Should the parent be assigned to overseas duty, the dependents will continue to be classified as Mississippi residents until such time as the parent is reassigned.
These residency definitions are consistent with laws enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi.
Residential Status of Military Personnel and Dependents
Members of the armed forces on extended active duty and stationed within the State of Mississippi may be classified as residents for the purpose of attending state-supported institutions of higher learning or community colleges of the State of Mississippi. Residential status of such military personnel who are not legal residents of Mississippi (as defined above) shall terminate upon their reassignment for duty in the continental United States outside the State of Mississippi.
Residential status of children of members of the armed forces on extended active duty shall be that of the military parent for the purpose of attending state-supported institutions of higher learning or community colleges of the State of Mississippi during the time that their military parents are stationed within Mississippi. This residency status shall be continued through the time that the military parents are stationed in an overseas area with last duty assignment within Mississippi, excepting temporary training assignments.
A military person on active duty stationed in Mississippi who wishes to claim in-state residential status must submit a certificate from the military showing the name of the military member; the name of the dependent, if for a dependent; the name of the organization of assignment and its address. The military member must be on active duty stationed in Mississippi on the date of registration of MCC. The certificate must include the signature of the commanding officer, the adjutant, or the personnel officer of the unit of assignment with signer’s rank and title. The certificate must be presented to the Director of Admissions at (or within 10 days before) registration each semester for the in-state certificate to be effective.
