“The fact that we are all here means we are living the dream.”
That’s how Doris Kendrick Parker, the keynote speaker at Friday’s MLK
2008 Celebration Program, incorporated her talk with the theme, “Living
the Dream: Wake Up and Step Up.”
Parker, president of East Mississippi Baptist State Convention Woman’s
Auxiliary and Dean of First Enterprise District Congress of Christian
Education, began her talk to the capacity crowd in the McCain Theater
stressing to the audience to take hold of their best life.
“Dr. King’s testimony is such a legacy,” Parker said. And to dream is
always in season. “Dr. King wore out many shoes in marching for not just
us but for justice,” she said.
Parker asked the younger members of the audience: “Don’t get caught up
in the bling that you fail to do the right thing.”
“Things are getting better, but we must wake up, get up and step up. We
must vote,” she added.
Included in the program were the announcements of the winners of the art
and essay contests. Essay winners were Danielle Chamblis, seventh grade,
Carver Middle School, first place; Karan Rahat, sixth grade, Lamar
Foundation, first place; Eddie Holloway, Carver, seventh grade; and
Whitney Rhett, sixth grade, Lamar; second place; Emily Hicks, West
Lauderdale, seventh grade; and Victoria Neal, Lamar, sixth grade, third
place; Kendra Hall and Keandra Dancy, West Lauderdale, seventh grade;
and Audresha Hill and Javeon Davis, Carver, sixth grade, honorable
mentions.
Art contest winners were Chrystianna Sloan, first; Takia Watts, second;
and Stephone Henderson, third; Cameron Seafus and Steven King, honorable
mention. All are sixth graders from Carver.

The 12 week-Weight Watchers session will begin Thursday, Jan. 31, at 8
a.m. in Smith Hall Room 208. “This will be our designated time and place
each week for this semester. Meetings will be short enough so that you
have plenty time to get to a 9 o’clock class,” said Sandy Clark,
organizer.
The cost is $132 for 12 weeks with no joining fee. “Students can also
join, so please pass the word,” she said.
Registration forms can be picked up in Clark’s office, Smith 225 or
Susan James’s office, Smith 110. If you plan to join, you must register
by Jan. 25. Although the registration deadline is Jan. 25th, you may pay
in two installments of $66 each. The first installment may be post-dated
to Jan. 31 and the second installment post-dated to Feb. 29.
If you
are interested in participating on the Faculty/Staff Relay for Life
team, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Great Southern
Room, Webb Hall. “If you would like to participate, but cannot attend
the meeting please let me know via email,” said Adam Stewart. This
year’s Relay will be May 2 at the Northeast Park.
