With the College playing a part in her life since here late teen years,
Martha Williams was overwhelmed by being named MCCer of the Month for
September.
And it was a special surprise with the announcement coming on her
birthday.
“I worked part time in the bookstore at Meridian Junior College when I
was a student here in the late 1960s,” Williams said.
The MCCer of the Month program is sponsored by The MCC Foundation, and
it spotlights the outstanding achievements of faculty and staff members.
With the award comes a $250 cash award and the honoree’s
professionally-made portrait is displayed in Ivy mall.
Citing working with students, faculty and staff as the most enjoyable
aspect of her job as bookstore manager, Williams said, “The Bookstore
staff is a great team and each person is a great asset to the success
that I have had in my professional career and also the success of the
Bookstore.”
“Each day is busy, but I love my job and the folks I work with,” she
said.
With 21 years of service to the College, Williams also worked at the
bookstore at Delta State University and marked 13 years at
Pioneer-Barnes. When the MCC bookstore manager position came available,
then business manager John Johnson contacted her about the job. “And as
they say, ‘that’s the rest of the story,’” Williams said. Johnson was
Williams’ high school principal prior to his career at MCC.
She graduated from West Lauderdale High School, attended MJC, worked and
came back to the College in the late 1970s and earned her associate’s
degree, and her roots in the Collinsville area have remained strong. “It
has always been my home, except for the few years Terry (her husband)
and I lived in Cleveland while he finished his degree.”
There are also family ties with Williams at MCC; her husband, Terry, is
the College’s physical plant director, and her son-in-law, Sander
Atkinson, is associate dean of student services. Two children, Misty and
Brad, and three grandchildren, Tucker, Griffin and Maddox, round out the
immediate family circle.
Williams takes to heart her philosophy: “To live each day the best you
can and remember you have no promise of tomorrow.”

MCC
faculty and staffers will want to stop by the Casteel Gallery Monday or
Tuesday afternoon to talk to Bill Chan, Bill Chan, director of Community
College Alliance for Franklin University, as he will be on hand to
discuss the College’s partnership with Franklin.
Chan’s visit is to introduce Meridian Community College’s partnership
with Franklin University Community College Alliance. His sessions in the
Casteel Room begin at 3 p.m.
Franklin University's Community College Alliance (CCA) Program offers an
online bachelor of science degree through an educational alliance with
more than 225 community and technical colleges in the United States.
This program provides opportunities for students at two-year colleges to
complete a bachelor's degree in a format that fits their career and
lifestyle needs, without leaving their community.
The university was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1902 under YMCA
sponsorship as the School of Commerce. Franklin has served
nontraditional students seeking to advance their education for more than
100 years, and today offers 16 undergraduate majors and three graduate
programs. Some 1,500 students earn degrees from Franklin each year.
Chan will be offering information about Franklin University in the Ivy
mall from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 10 and 11. In addition, he will be
talking to faculty and staff members as well as student organizations.
For more information about Chan’s visit, contact Dr. Richie McAlister,
dean of occupational education, at extension 779.

The College will become a cultural Mecca during its 2007-2008 Arts &
Letters Series season, with such highlights as a giant puppet theater,
jazz and art of a by-gone era.
And as a special treat, there will be a high-octane fiddle fest that
features an international multi-talented cast.
“It’s a great season lineup,” said Leia Hill, MCC foundation program
coordinator. “This series promises to be the best yet. With performances
by nationally known artists like, Barrage, Bill Evans, FROGZ and the
Juggernaut Jug Band, the value just can not be beat,” she said.
The Bits ‘N Pieces Giant Puppet Theatre production of “Cinderella and
the Chinese Slipper” will get under way Thursday evening at 7 p.m. A
matinee is set for 9:30.
In this original retelling of the beloved children’s classic, Bits ‘N
Pieces’ giant nine-foot tall puppets and costumed characters take their
audience to China, the earliest known home of their heroine Pandarella.
Yes, “Cinderella” and her family are pandas, and her Fairy Godmother, a
magic goldfish. At the stroke of midnight, a gong rings in the Chinese
New Year. Amidst the “panda”-monium, the New Year Baby Dragon
accompanies the king on his search for the girl whose foot fits the
golden shoe. This unique combination of talented puppeteers and actors
brings a new perspective to this classic tale. Children and adults will
love this fanciful performance.
Leia Hill, MCC Foundation program coordinator, reminds colleagues MCCers
receive free admission to all of the Arts & Letters performances. “Your
MCC ID will serve as your admission ticket to most of our events. We
will have reserved seating for only two events: Barrage and The Meridian
Symphony’s Concert The Creation. As MCC employees, you may also purchase
up to five adult tickets (per show) for a reduced price of $5 per
ticket,” she said.
