Relay for Life taps Baxter |
|
Associate
Vice President of Research, Development and Governmental Affairs Dr.
Kathy Baxter has gained another title; this time it’s honorary chair.
Each year, Relay for Life of Lauderdale County selects honorary
chairpersons to serve as cancer advocates and to encourage other
survivors to continue their battle. During a press conference last week,
Baxter was named honorary chairmen for Relay for Life 2007 along with
Hannah Eubakes, 11, of Meridian.
“I’m really honored and touched you’ve chosen me,” said Baxter, whose
battle against cancer began in 1998. She is a survivor of
dermatomyositis, invasive and carcinoma breast cancer and bone cancer.
“I’m so deeply indebted to my family and friends who supported me during
my repeated diagnoses and treatments,” she said. “I cannot tell you how
much I appreciate those who support Relay for Life and what you do for
cancer survivors.”
Eubanks was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in October 2003.
A fifth-grader at Russell Christian Academy, she will help host the
Third Annual Relay for Life Pageant at this year’s event.
The two chairpersons’ duties also will include raising awareness of
cancer through speaking engagements and media appearances. Both also
will be guests of honors, along with all other cancer survivors, at the
annual Survivors’ Reception. This year’s reception is Sunday, April 22,
from 3-5 p.m. in the Meridian Campus Mississippi State University
Kahlmus Auditorium.
“After treatment is over, you tend to forget the worst physical pains of
cancers, so now I dwell on how cancer was a blessing to me,” Baxter
said. “I dwell on how much I’ve learned and how many people care for me.
I can express gratitude now in a way that I couldn’t before.”
The Relay fr Life of Lauderdale County takes place at Meridian High
School’s Ray Stadium on Friday, April 27. For more information, call

Joining the cause for
mid-level funding |
|
MCCers including faculty and students were among hundreds at the state’s
Capitol Wednesday urging lawmakers to pour more money into their
institutions.
They were there at the Mississippi Faculty Association for Community and
Junior Colleges to discuss the issue at a news conference. MCC students
Greisha Smith, Laine Deneux, Kimmea Spears, Sasha McCullar, Megan
Breaux, Betsy Mitchell, Elliot Brewer, Michaela Harrington and Shanna
Grace joined Al Mitchell, Terri Crawford, Delia Harwell and Teresa
Church in representing the College.
“We had a good trip for Capitol Day. The students met and spoke with
Sen. Burton, Sen. Carmichael, Sen. Gloria Williamson (Terri Crawford’s
first cousin), Rep. Young, Rep. Snowden, and Rep. Horne. They also posed
for a picture with Gov. Barbour, and we were introduced to the Senate.
We had a very good group of students, and they each thanked the
legislators for supporting the Mid-level FTE bill,” Mitchell said.
To enhance education, community colleges want the Legislature to
increase state funding $2,171 per student to get to a mid-way point
between public schools and Mississippi’s regional universities. The
price tag amounts to $125 million over the next three years.
If that’s done, community colleges “will no longer be treated as second
class citizens in the education food chain,’’ Itawamba Community College
President David Cole said at the Capitol news conference amid applause.
Community colleges are growing in popularity and deserve more support,
lawmakers were told. Today, 69 percent of all freshmen in Mississippi’s
public and private institutions of higher

Students joining the Capitol Day activities included Shana Grace, Betsy
Mitchell, Sasha McClullar and Kimmea Spears.

Books for sale |
|
Looking for a great read? Or are you in search of a research
publication? The Meridian Community College Faculty Staff Association
Book Sale would be a place to start.
The sale is set for Wednesday, March 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the
patio of Smith Hall, weather permitting.
Kimberly Ennis, president of MCCFSA, said the sale will be a great time
to buy some books to enjoy during Spring Break. “Remember, proceeds from

student.”

The challenge is up to you |
|
MCC students in the bowling class have thrown down the gauntlet.
Michele Smith, chair of the division of wellness and fitness, said the
bowling course, with its 20-plus members under the direction of
instructor Stan Bottorff, have issued a challenge to the College faculty
and staff members who bowl to form a team and to bowl two games in
competition.
“The students are excited about this challenge and hope there is enough
MCC faculty and staff members who want to bowl on this team, Smith said.
There will be a minimal charge for the game which includes shoe rental
and games, and anyone interested on being on the team should contact
Smith. Her extension is 773.
The date for the faculty/student challenge will be set after spring
break, Smith, said, but noted it will be on a Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
“This is a great wellness opportunity,” Smith said, adding, “If several
people are interested in continuing with another round of bowling, then
we will try to schedule a wellness event that faculty and staff can
participate in.”
One of the student bowlers said, “We want to beat the faculty and
staff.”
