Do you like to scribble bits of poetry? Do you have a great idea for a
short story?
Then, the College’s Literary Contest is looking for your words.
This annual competition seeks writers from local and area high schools
as well as the community and the MCC community, said Morgan Boothe,
language and literature instructor and editor of the Literary Review.
The Review is the publication in which the winning works are published.
Top writers are rewarded for their winning words. First place winners
garner $50; second place winners earn $25; and third place winners gain
$15. There are two divisions, high school in which sophomores, juniors
and seniors are encouraged to enter; and community and MCC in which
non-high school, community residents 18 or older or MCC students are
encouraged to enter.
Judges are looking for entries for the categories of short story,
informal essay and poetry. The short story limit is two entries and it
must not exceed 10 typewritten, double-spaced pages with regular
margins. There is also a two-entry limit for the informal essay. It must
not exceed five typewritten, double-spaced pages with regular margins.
Three entries is the limit for the poetry category. Each poem must not
exceed 50 typewritten lines. All manuscripts must be original and typed
on white 8 ½ by 11-inch paper.
Contestants can enter one or all categories and the deadline for
submissions is March 3. The judges’ announcement of winners is April 7.
For an entry form or for more information, contact Boothe at the College
at 601-484-8829 or email at mboothe@mcc.cc.ms.us or 910 Highway 19
North, Meridian, MS 39307.

Come to the Miller Gallery today for the opening reception of the works
by MCCer Terrell Taylor.
The reception gets under way at 5-6:30 p.m. and features many of her
mixed media art. With birds as a common theme, Taylor said she chooses
birds for they “represent a symbol of transcendence, the fleeting in the
natural cycles of life, the scatter-bright, ancient, mythological past.
“As subject matter birds appeal because of their ability to represent
the transitional in every creature’s earth experience, from the confined
quality of an egg, to the open, overwhelming freedom of flight. I
believe the pattern that has emerged in my work refers to nature’s
transformative powers,” Taylor said.
The show will be on display throughout February.
