Step by step

Whether you step lively, step to it or step out, the College’s Wellness Committee would like to challenge you to log in 10,000 steps a day.

Fitness experts agree that walking 10,000 steps – five miles – is close to the American College of Sports Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 30 minutes a day of physical activity. The Surgeon General’s recommendation for physical activity is to add about 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity each day on top of your customary daily activities.

Next year, the wellness committee, would like to offer this as a competition like the walking competition of several years ago. “Most of us don’t realize how many steps that we make daily. We probably think that we make more than we actually do. Even with aerobics yesterday, I didn’t make the 10,000 steps, but today I did,” said Barbara Bishop, wellness and fitness instructor, who is helping to coordinate the 10,000 steps program.

A pedometer is a good way to measure exercise efforts and stay motivated, Bishop said, noting that walking a mile is about 2,000 steps. Dietitians agree that people most successful with weight loss takes about 12,000-15,000 steps a day.

“Everyone will need to purchase a pedometer which can range in prices from $10 to $20. You may be able to find some a lot cheaper or higher,” she said.

Bishop also noted the Wellness and Fitness division is offering “drop in” class activities throughout the remainder of the semester. “From Monday through Thursday, there’s a step aerobic class at 1 o’clock. You don’t have to be a ‘veteran’ of step aerobics; you will be able to catch on. The 9 o’clock low impact class on Tuesday and Thursday is available, also. Other classes may have the numbers to allow you to drop in and see if you would like to join classes in the fall,” she said

The cardio equipment is available in the lobby of the Damon Fitness Center as well as stationary bikes in the weight room. Any of the Fitness Center faculty or staff would be more than happy to help you get started on your activity and/or give encouragement for your weight loss,” Bishop said.
