Thames is MCCer of the Month

Michele Thames received a New Year's gift she won't soon forget. She was tapped as MCCer of the Month for January.

This award is sponsored by The MCC Foundation and it recognizes outstanding work of College faculty and staff. In addition to a check for $250, the honoree has his or her professional portrait played in Ivy Hall.

Thames, who holds both a bachelor and master's degrees from Mississippi State University, came to the College in June 1996. She serves as coordinator of the Lifetime Quest Center and is the Arts & Letters Series coordinator.

"I get to meet so many different, interesting people, from guest performers to authors to our Foundation member to our Lifetime Quest members," Thames said.

Thames is proactive when it comes to community. She is a member of the City of Meridian's Architectural Review Board, the Meridian and Lauderdale County and Mississippi Junior Miss Programs, the newly formed Grow Meridian Team and Relay for Life.

She and her husband, Hampton, who was recently tapped as a Top 40 Under 40 by the Mississippi Business Journal, have a 14-month-old son, Davis. With a goodly part of her position consisting of travel, Thames said, "it's nice to have downtime to be at home with my family. I love to cook and do things to my house," she said.

College to host theater association

MCC will host the Mississippi Theatre Association Annual Play Festival and Convention Friday, Jan. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 14, said Ronnie Miller, fine arts division chair.

More than 200 people have pre-registered and several more will register during the weekend, Miller said, adding registration tables and displays will be set up in the Ivy Hall Mall and in front of the theater with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition to workshops and meetings of college, high school and community theatre people, there is the play competition with the winners going to Jacksonville, Fla., for the Southeastern Theatre Conference and Play Festival.

High school winners from the Southern Regional Festival that was held in Hattiesburg are Hattiesburg, Oak Grove and Ocean Springs high schools; winners from the Northern Festival held in Starkville are Lafayette, Olive Branch and Starkville high schools. The community theaters competing are Actors Anonymous from Hattiesburg, Delta Center Stage from Greenville, Gulfport Little Theatre, Starkville Community Theatre, Picyaune-on-Stage Theatre and the Tupelo Community Theatre.

Play performances begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and run through 10 p.m. on Saturday. The Award Brunch is on Sunday. Tickets for all 12 plays can be purchased for $15. The specific play schedule and titles can be found at the registration desk, Miller said.

A look back at Workshop Week...

Retired MCCer Ray Hosley earned accolades and applause during the MCC general meeting when it was announced he is funding the Ray Hosley Scholarship.  The scholarship was for $1,000.

The first recipient of the scholarship, Eva Lockhart, thanked the former custodial worker for his generosity. "He is helping me continue my education," the Women's Basketball Team member said.

Also during the morning session, Elliott Street received of the first Bill Scaggs Out of the Box Award. Street submitted a suggestion of the College hosting workshops for local teens to develop their performance talents. With this award comes a $1,000 honorarium.

And in speaking of winners, Wanda Dixon won $1,000 from The MCC Foundation. The award came from a drawing The Foundation held.

Extended Bookstore Hours

The Eagles Nest Bookstore will have extended hours during the first weeks of classes, said Cher Warren of the Bookstore staff.

Today through Thursday, the Bookstore will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; on Friday, opening hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

From Jan. 16-18, the Bookstore will be open from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Regular hours of operation resume Friday, Jan. 19.

Remember. Celebrate. Act. A Day On, Not a Day Off

The College's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration will be Thursday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m., in the Ivy Hall Theater.

The Committee, headed by Dr. Jim Dauphine, has worked very hard to put together an entertaining and uplifting program. Vivian Naylor's MCC Gospel Choir; the local school children reading their winning essays; and our keynote speaker, Bertrand Antoine, Jr., a career educator in Mississippi, will round out the program.

"You are encouraged to permit your students the opportunity to take part in this celebration of the life of a great American," said Dr. Scott Elliott, MCC president.
