This course consists of a study of nutrition for all individuals. Digestion, metabolism and diet therapy are introduced. 3 hours lecture.
PNV 1213, Body Structure and Function, 3 cr.
This course is a study of body structure and function essential to safe and effective nursing care. Each system of the body is covered with applications to nursing. 2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab.
PNV 1312, Growth and Development, 2 cr.
This course is a study of the normal developmental processes of humans from conception to death, including physical, emotional, social, and intellectual aspects. 2 hours lecture.
PNV 1425, Fundamentals of Nursing, 5 cr.
This course provides students with knowledge and skills necessary to care for an individual. Study includes beginning use of the nursing process; cause and prevention of illness; patient, family, and community health care provisions; and resource agencies available. This course also includes personal health care, medical terms, and preparation to assist the patient in meeting basic living needs. 5 hours lecture. Pre/Co-requisite: Concurrent registration in PNV 1434. If a passing grade is not earned, both courses must be repeated concurrently upon re-admission.
PNV 1434, Fundamentals of Nursing Lab/Clinical, 4 cr.
This course provides demonstrations, supervision and practice for the student to master fundamental nursing skills. 6 hours lab, 3 hours clinical. Pre/Co-requisite: Concurrent registration in PNV 1425. If a passing grade is not earned, both courses must be repeated concurrently upon re-admission.
PNV 1412, Geriatric Nursing, 2 cr.
This course utilizes the nursing process to teach the care of the geriatric patient. Clinical experience in a long-term facility is a component of this course. 1 hour lecture, 3 hours clinical. Pre/Co-requisites: PNV 1425 and 1434.
PNV 1513, Pharmacology, 3 cr.
This course is designed to provide the student with appropriate basic theoretical and clinical information related to drugs, including: classifications, sources, dosages, basic math and measurements, regulatory requirements, and basic principles of drug administration. 2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab. Prerequisites: All first semester Practical Nursing courses.
PNV 1615, Medical/Surgical Nursing , 5 cr.
This course introduces nursing theory for the following medical-surgical disorders: cancer, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, and digestive. Emphasis is placed on developing and demonstrating an understanding of the role of the practical nurse functioning as an effective team member. 5 hours lecture. Pre/Co-requisites: Basic Nutrition (PNV 1113), Body Structure and Function (PNV 1213), Growth and Development (PNV 1312), Geriatric Nursing (PNV 1412), Fundamentals of Nursing (PNV 1425), and Fundamentals of Nursing Lab (PNV 1434), and concurrent registration in PNV 1624. A passing grade in PNV 1615 and 1624 is required in order to progress in the Practical Nursing Program. If a passing grade is not earned, both courses must be repeated concurrently upon re-admission.

This course includes supervised laboratory and clinical experiences for application of medical/surgical theory and the development of skill and the use of nursing process. 2 hours lab, 9 hours clinical. Pre/Co-requisites: Basic Nutrition (PNV 1113), Body Structure and Function (PNV 1213), Growth and Development (PNV 1312), Geriatric Nursing (PNV 1412), Fundamentals of Nursing (PNV 1425), and Fundamentals of Nursing Lab (PNV 1434), and concurrent registration in PNV 1615. A passing grade in PNV 1615 and 1624 is required in order to progress in the Practical Nursing Program. If a passing grade is not earned, both courses must be repeated concurrently upon re-admission.
PNV 1633, Alterations in Adult Health, 3 cr.
This course introduces nursing theory for the following medical-surgical disorders: urological, endocrine, reproductive, musculoskeletal, and skin and special senses. PNV 1716, Maternal-Child Nursing, 6 cr.
This course utilizes the nursing process to teach care for the expectant mother from conception to delivery, including newborn, child and the family unit during normal and complicated conditions. Care of the pediatric client and various disorders affecting this group are introduced. Clinical experience includes perinatal labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn, and pediatrics. 5 hours lecture, 3 hours clinical. Prerequisites: All first and second semester Practical Nursing courses.
PNV 1813, Psychiatric Concepts, 3 cr.
This course provides an introduction to mental health concepts. Emphasis is placed on normal as well as abnormal behavior in application of principles of effective therapeutic communication. Clinical experience will provide application of previously learned theory. 2 hours lecture, 3 hours clinical. Prerequisites: All first and second semester Practical Nursing courses.
PNV 1911, Practical Nursing Seminar I, 1 cr.
This course is designed to facilitate activities incorporated in the Health Occupation Students of America and the Practical Nursing Program student organization. The course will allow group assembly on a regular basis to accomplish the goals and objectives of these organizations. Development of leadership skills, an understanding of group dynamics, educational enrichment, stimulation of enthusiasm and interest in community service and affairs, and establishment of rapport with other health education professionals should be the outcomes of this course. This course is mandatory for the MCC Practical Nursing students. Meets one hour per week. Prerequisite: Currently enrolled in the Practical Nursing program.

This course further develops decision-making skills and promotes an interest in continued professional development. Legal aspects of nursing and employment opportunities and responsibilities, as well as preparation for the State Board Exam are included. 1 hour lecture, 6 hours clinical. Prerequisites: All first and second semester Practical Nursing courses.
