MCC Jazz Band
The Meridian Community College Jazz Band is an instrumental ensemble with a long history. The group rehearses in the fall as the Monday Night Jazz Band and the spring as the MCC Big Band, which plays a fund raiser every March or April. In 1984 the band played at the World’s Fair in New Orleans and was featured on the 100th Anniversary Concert Series at Carnegie Hall in New York, March of 1991. Auditions are necessary for this ensemble, and are open to MCC students on first priority basis. The band has been invited five times to play at the “Jazz in the Grove” festival which is a nationally recognized event. Auditions are held each fall and rehearsals are from 7-9 pm most Mondays. We bring in a nationally known artist to be featured with the band in the fall or early spring every year. Five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, and a rhythm section comprise the unit. Scholarships are also available for this group, contact Carey Smith at 601-484-8637 for more details.
